I’m excited to share a brief exploration of Midjourney’s latest feature, which introduces the intriguing capability to consistently use the same character across a variety of images. This functionality, akin to the existing “Style Reference” feature, diverges by focusing on character consistency rather than stylistic continuity across creations. Aptly named “Character Reference,” this new tool marks a significant advancement in image generation technology.

How it works?

  • Type --cref URL after your prompt with a URL to an image of a character
  • You can use --cw to modify reference 'strength' from 100 to 0
  • strength 100 (--cw 100) is default and uses the face, hair, and clothes
  • At strength 0 (--cw 0) it'll just focus on face (good for changing outfits / hair etc)

As with any initial release, it’s important to acknowledge that this version is not without its flaws. Presently, one of the most notable limitations is the restriction against incorporating multiple distinct characters within a single composition. Despite these early challenges, the potential applications for this feature are vast and exciting.

To put this feature to the test, I embarked on a creative experiment.

My first step involved generating an image of a character by providing a detailed prompt designed to elicit a comprehensive character design sheet, showcasing the character from multiple perspectives — front, side, and rear views. Here’s the specific prompt I used to visualize a character:

Following the creation of this initial character image, my next endeavor was to produce a series of images featuring this character in various scenarios, aiming to evaluate the “Character Reference” feature’s effectiveness in maintaining visual consistency across different contexts.
