Alessandro Manzoni often referred to his “25 readers,” a term that, for the esteemed Milanese author, was more of a playful exaggeration than reality. He was fully aware of this, of course. Such a figure served him well as a rhetorical tool. In my case, however, the situation is quite literal: each week, my column is perused by an audience numbering between 5 and 10 readers.

Is this a modest figure? Not in the slightest. In fact, I am genuinely delighted by it. This sentiment stems from the nature of my writings, which aim to collate and share intriguing narratives I’ve encountered on Medium. These stories, while captivating to me, are not universally appealing; they resonate with my personal tastes. Given the uniqueness of each individual, it’s hardly guaranteed that my interests will align with those of others.

So, what’s the point of this preamble? Simply put, it’s an expression of gratitude to those who stumble upon these pages and choose to spend a few moments in my company.

With that said, this Sunday’s assortment features tales about Socrates, magnificent castles, and the adventurous gambit of betting on one’s future.

Wishing everyone a splendid Sunday!
